OPEN LETTER: YEAR THREE

YEAR THREE…

Recently, I was listening to a 2019 recap from the Business of Fashion podcast.  Tim Blanks and Imran Amed were discussing the defining moments in fashion last year and where the industry is going in the next decade.  When Imran asked Tim about what the future of fashion looked like in a world combating climate change and political turmoil, Tim said:

“I think the interesting thing to come out of the sustainability debate is this idea of localization as opposed to globalization.  [Where] everything is made and sold locally. Where people used to buy clothes made by somebody who lived down the road. Before there was ready to wear.  It’s almost like a couture sensibility but more so a make to amend. I could see a time, if we weather the rising sea levels, and the unbreathable air, and the raging fires, where everything would go back to dressmakers and tailors.”

I didn’t know it at the time but when I opened my atelier, that’s exactly what I was doing.  I saw an industry that wasn’t working for me as a designer or a sustainable future.  I found my answer in a little shop in Unionville designing dresses for my neighbors.

Love,

David
